My inspiration was taken from some of my favorite artists; Margaret Keane, Piet Mondrian, and Jesús Helguera.
I wanted to encapsulate the feeling of nostalgia from my childhood days sitting under my grandmother’s mulberry tree in the Fresno summer heat while helping her pelar nopales. The colorful Nopales filled with tunas represent embracing who I am, and to never be ashamed of who I am. The Guardian represents my role as a daughter and mother to guard my family’s history and folklore and to dutifully pass it down to my children.
The story of Joseph was a story my mother always shared with me, therefore The Guardian’s colorful rebozo represents her status as a favored child by her mother somewhat like Joseph’s special garment.
The golden marigolds are flowers that were always planted in my mother’s treasured garden.
